November 15, 2006: My contractor told me that it is "the rule" that the winter rains start only after the roof is opened up on your remodel. He has done a great job tarping down the opening so that rain infiltration has been minimal.

October 2006: After 20 years in the same place, we have purchased a new house. It is a 'fixer' and needs major remodeling. So now I know what my clients go through: all the worries about design, schedule, and budget. Also, the amazing range of choices for fixtures and finishes can be daunting. I am applying my 16 years of experience to streamline the process for my family and myself.

I still hold firmly to my basic ecological values. They are listed in a Preface to my written material specifications. Each contractor who bids on my project will see these on the first page:

Environmental Priorities:
  1. Global Warming/Reduction of Fossil Fuel Use/Energy Efficiency.
    1. Exceptional R-value windows using Heat Mirror suspended coating film.
    2. Advanced Framing to minimize thermal bridging.
    3. Above-code levels of insulation.
  2. Resource Conservation.
    1. Use FSC-certified lumber wherever possible.
    2. Use recycle-content materials wherever possible.
    3. Selectively pick used items such as fixtures and storage area cabinets.
  3. Low/No Toxic materials.
    1. Avoid urea-formaldehyde glues in interior-use plywood and fiberboard. Use phenyl- formaldehyde glues (typically used in exterior applications).
    2. Use low/no VOC paint, primer, glues and fillers.
  4. Job Site Recycling.
    1. Sort on-site waste materials into separate dumpster areas.
    2. Encourage street side pick up/recycling of useable materials.
