Growing family added a dormer (by crane) to create a third bedroom. New kitchen with quartz countertops. Home office added to basement.

Knocking Down the Wall (Bellevue, 1996)

By knocking down a wall of this 1960's house, we were able to open up the kitchen to the dining room and family room. Complete new kitchen with barstool eat-in counter. New lighting was an important component of defining spaces without walls.

In a new house, this kitchen has cherry cabinetry, rough-hewn granite tile backsplash, stainless steel appliances, granite tile counter top and solid granite island top.

BEFORE:
Front door leads directly into kitchen. It becomes a cluster point and no one moves into the side wings.
AFTER:
Re-activating the Wing (Des Moines, 1998)

This intriguing half-timbered lodge-style house has wings with great water views. We moved the kitchen to the end of one of the wings to re-activate its use. The kitchen has a large framed opening into the dining room/living room area and brings life back to this section of the house.

This simple renovation used low-VOC cabinet finishes, recycled paper-resin countertop, low-VOC paintand very low-VOC wood stains for wood trim.

The new larger kitchen was placed at the opposite end of the house. It features maple cabinets, oak flooring and a butcher block top island.

New layout has re-oriented shower entering the bathroom proper. Tile wainscoting from small 'boutique' producer. Custom sink cabinet modeled on cruise ship design.

BEFORE:
This grand house had no bathroom on the main level. There was no obvious place to locate a half-bath without seriously interfering with its elegant wood paneled interior.
AFTER:
Finding Space for a Powder Room (Seattle, 2006)

We enclosed the side door entry under the existing roof overhang. Exterior matches existing house trim. Interior has enough room for oversize sink.
